Canora RCMP: Impaired driver charged, vehicle impounded

A Ford F-150 and Hyundai Accent collided in Sturgis. Police investigated the collision and determined the driver of the Ford was impaired by alcohol.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP dealt with impaired driving, unauthorized withdrawals and a denied firearms licence.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 38 calls from Feb. 28 to March 6, some of which included:

  • three 911 Act calls;
  • two abandoned vehicles;
  • one animal call;
  • one Child, Youth and Family Services Act call;
  • one Controlled Drugs and Substances Act call;
  • one Coroners Act call;
  • three false alarms;
  • three frauds;
  • one harassing communications call;
  • two Liquor Act calls;
  • one Mental Health Act call;
  • one mischief;
  • two traffic collisions;
  • 12 traffic offenses;
  • one sextortion,
  • one suspicious person and
  • one wellbeing check.

Drinking and driving

On Feb. 28, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision in Sturgis involving a Ford F-150 and Hyundai Accent.

Police investigated the collision and determined the driver of a Ford F-150 was impaired by alcohol. Police arrested a man outside his residence for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The man provided two breath samples of 170mg% and 150mg%. The driver of the Hyundai Accent received minor injuries from the collision.

The man was charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired and operation of a motor vehicle over 80mg%. The man's drivers’ licence was suspended and his vehicle was impounded for 60 days.

Firearm licence denied

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were notified on March 3 by the Canadian Firearms Program that a man's Possession Acquisition Licence renewal was denied and the man would have to turn over his firearms to police. Investigation is ongoing.

Unauthorized withdrawals

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report of unauthorized withdrawals from a bank account totalling over $5,000 on Feb. 4. Police have identified a suspect and the investigation is ongoing.

Scam artist?

On Feb. 4, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were called by witness who reported seeing a man put himself in harms way by blocking a snowmobile on a street in Preeceville. The man later called the RCMP to report he was hit by a snowmobile. Police determined no offence occurred on behalf of the snowmobile operator. The man was warned about his actions.

Another impaired driver

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Feb. 5 to an impaired driving call in Canora.  

Police located the suspected male driver at his place of work. The man was found to be impaired by alcohol and was arrested. The driver provided two breath samples of 220mg% and 210 mg% which is almost three times the legal limit.

The man was charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired and operation of a motor vehicle over 80mg%. The man's drivers’ licence was suspended and his vehicle was impounded for 60 days.
