CANORA - Anticipation is building for Canora in Bloom, which gets underway this weekend.
Brandi Zavislak, community development officer, said there are so many attractions for just about anyone to enjoy.
“People love the tradition, the variety of things to do for all ages, including dancing, downtown street market, great food, golfing, and of course this year we have the grand opening of the new Canora Aquatic Park. We’re looking forward to a week of fun events,” said Zavislak. “Canora in Bloom originally started as a week to celebrate the best local yards and gardens. From there it grew into a week-long celebration.”
The celebration begins with a community-wide garage sale on Saturday and Sunday. For those who bring along an appetite for reading or for food, the Canora Parkland Library will be hosting a book & bake sale.
Sunday morning will feature the traditional nondenominational church service at the Town of Canora office, followed by the Canora Golf & Country Club Hole in One Golf Tournament.
The Canora Keen Age Centre celebrates its 50th anniversary on July 17 with a come-and-go tea, which will included dainties.
July 18 will feature the always-popular Perogy Lunch at St. Andrews United Church. That same afternoon, the Canora Parkland Library is scheduled to host the Saskatchewan Science Centre Outreach Program. In the evening, it’s the Canora Golf & Country Club Fun Night, sponsored by Dobrowody Distilleries.
A quilt show will be hosted by A Common Thread at St. Andrews United Church on July 19. Later that afternoon it’s the grand opening of the Canora Aquatic Park, including a free swim after the ceremony, sponsored by the Town of Canora and Crossroads Credit Union.
The featured event on July 20 is the Picnic in the Park & Old-Fashioned Dance with the Zayshley Band providing the music. This event takes place at King George Park, hosted by the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee, and will include beef on a bun, hot dogs and drinks.
“It used to be hosted by Lioness, and many people of all ages have said they have missed the Picnic in the Park, so we have brought it back,” said Zavislak.
The downtown street market, featuring vendors from Canora and surrounding area, will wrap up Canora in Bloom in style on July 21. This year, Zavislak said they have decided to add a dance, featuring In Haus DJ Magic Mike. Supper featuring beef on a bun will be served at the CN Station House.
Zavislak said Canora in Bloom continues to evolve and grow for the enjoyment of Canora and area residents, adding, “For future years, the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee is hoping to bring back the yard beautification aspect which was such a big part of Canora in Bloom in the early years.”
