Canora 13-year-old inspires fundraiser for local cemetery

Ty Korol was concerned about the upkeep of the Mazeppa cemetery, where his Baba, Marlene Korol, was laid to rest approximately a year ago, and sparked the idea for a fall supper fundraiser.

CANORA - A fall supper fundraiser was held on Oct. 21 at Rainbow Hall to support a cause near and dear to 13-year-old Ty Korol of Canora.

These days, many country churches in the Canora area are struggling to keep up their church buildings, halls and cemeteries.

Korol took the initiative to do something about it. He was concerned about the upkeep of the Mazeppa cemetery, where his Baba, Marlene Korol, was laid to rest approximately a year ago.

Korol asked his mom Linda Banga, “What can I do for a fundraiser to help keep up the cemetery.”

On Oct. 21, Ty’s vision became a reality. Linda had contacted the Rainbow Hall Committee to ask if they would team up to put on a fall supper.

According to reports from the event, it was a success due to a lot of hard work from Rainbow Hall Committee members and volunteers from around the area including Canora, Mazeppa, and Sturgis.

Making the event even more meaningful, Fr. Udod spoke the blessing on the food prepared and the volunteers who prepared it.

The menu consisted of a Ukrainian meal: Perogies, mushroom sauce, cabbage rolls, sausage, baked macaroni, meatballs, nalysnyky and sala.

After expenses, $1,534 was raised to help with the future upkeep of Mazeppa cemetery. The Rainbow hall committee continues its fundraising efforts fix the Mazeppa heritage church, including the church roof, hall roof, and handicap bathrooms.
