Team Sask continues medal pursuit at 2023 Canada Winter Games

REGINA - Team Saskatchewan won a pair of medals at the 2023 Canada Winter Games and another win in hockey puts the men's team enjoying a day off before quarter-finals are held.

TEAM SASKATCHEWAN IN DEPTH:

SPEED SKATING - LONG TRACK

  • Team Sask flagbearer Luca Veeman got Tuesday off to a great start. He opened the day winning silver in the 1500m men’s event. Bon Lowe finished 9th, Ferguson English 11th and Daniel Pauli finished 18th.

  • The female 1500m saw Team Sask add another medal to the haul. Serena Dallaire earned a bronze medal while Ella Cloutier had a great race to finish 4th. Sophia Dvorak and Melissa Scutchings finished 24th and 25th respectively.

  • On Wednesday, more medal hopes in Halifax. The morning will see the male and female 500m events while in the afternoon male and female team pursuit will be on the ice.

HOCKEY - MALE

  • The boys finished play in Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record after a 5-2 win over previously unbeaten Quebec. Lee Shurgot, Carsen Adair, Kazden Mathies, Joby Baumuller and Connor Bear all scored for Saskatchewan in the win.

  • The team has finished first in their pool and will enjoy a day off Wednesday before quarter-final play begins on Thursday.

RINGETTE - FEMALE

  • The girls bounced back on Tuesday and earned their first win of the Games, 8-4 over PEI. 

BIATHLON

  • A day after picking up Team Sask’s first medal of the Winter Games, the biathlon team was back in action on Tuesday. In the male 10 km pursuit, James Grundahl finished 17th, Dawson Schigol finished 20th, Nick Selinger 22nd and Drayton Lonsberry 31st.

  • In the female 7.5km pursuit, Rhiann Arnold, who won a bronze medal in biathlon Monday, finished in 5th place while Jaelyn Selinger finished 16th. Amelia McDonald finished 18th and Kaycee Nord 29th.

  • Wednesday is a practise day for the group.

CURLING - FEMALE

  • After a day off on Wednesday, Hannah Rugg’s Regina rink are back on the ice in Summerside. They’ll meet BC at 8 a.m. CST and then Ontario at 12 p.m. CST.

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

  • After dropping their opening game on Monday, Team Sask got one right back. Against New Brunswick, the team went up 23-14 at the half and went on to finish off a 46-35 win to even their record at 1-1. 

  • On Wednesday they will play their third game in three days, meeting Newfoundland at 11 a.m. CST.

FREESTYLE SKIING

  • Wednesday will feature slopestyle finals at Brookvale but no Saskatchewan athletes are competing. They are now en route to New Brunswick for moguls. Training days at Crabbe Mountain tomorrow and Thursday.
