REGINA - It will be another busy day for Team Saskatchewan athletes at the 2023 Canada Winter Games. Team Saskatchewan had claimed  its first medal, a bronze in the biathlon from Prudhomme’s Rhiann Arnold on Feb. 20, and followed that with two silver medals.

TEAM SASKATCHEWAN IN DEPTH:

BIATHLON

• Team Sask’s first medal came from biathlon athlete Rhiann Arnold of Prudhomme in the 6 km sprint. “I wasn’t expecting to place so high,” said Arnold after winning the team’s first medal of the games.

• Tuesday is the 10 km pursuit male in the morning and the 7.5 km pursuit female in the afternoon.

CURLING - female

• Team Sask had a battle on their hands Monday against the Northwest Territories. Saskatchewan held a 3-2 lead heading to the 8th end after three-straight blanks. With the hammer in 8, Team NT scored a pair to win 4-3.

• The loss drops Team Rugg’s record to 1-2. They have a day off on Tuesday before meeting BC on Wednesday morning.

HOCKEY - male

• Team Sask is 2-0 after beating Manitoba 4-0 on Monday. Prince Albert Raiders’ prospect Luke Moroz got things started, scoring his second of the tournament to put Saskatchewan up 1-0 at 3:06 of the first period. Lee Shurgot, Cole Reschny and Kazden Mathies all added their firsts as Sask rolled to their second-straight win. Swift Current Broncos draft pick Berney Weston stopped all 22-shots he faced for the shutout. Saskatchewan outshot Manitoba 30-22.

• The team will now face Quebec in their final pool A game on Tuesday afternoon. Quebec is also 2-0 after wins over Manitoba (6-4) and New Brunswick (7-1). The winner will finish first in pool A.

RINGETTE - female

• After a 9-1 loss in Sunday’s opener, Team Sask faced 0-1 BC on Monday afternoon. The team jumped out to an early 3-1 lead but penalty trouble helped BC battle back and take a 4-3 lead.

• Tied 7-7, the teams needed extra time and it would be BC that would score the win.

• Tuesday, the girls meet Team PEI at 8 a.m. CST. PEI is 2-0 after wins over Nova Scotia and BC.

GYMNASTICS

• Saskatchewan’s second and third medals of the Games came late Monday in both the male and female trampoline - synchro. 

• Halle Pipko and Jamie Reschke of Regina claimed a silver medal in the female event. Pipko, 17, and Reschke, 15, were in sixth place after their first routine in the preliminary round and fifth after their second and final preliminary round routine. In the final, the girls pulled off their best routine of the day. After scores of 28.100 and 28.660 in the preliminary round, Pipko and Reschke had a score of 41.100 in the final.

• In the male synchro trampoline, the team of Wilson Reimche and Connor Wehage of Saskatoon also earned a silver medal after a spectacular final routine in PEI. Reimche, 13, and Wehage, 15, were in fourth place after the preliminary round but saved their best for last, a score of 42.360.

• On Tuesday, the male team events continues while the female team event begins. 

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

• Competition opened for Team Sask’s wheelchair basketball team. A rough ride to start as the team fell 64-41 to Quebec. Walker Cunningham led all Saskatchewan players with nine points in the loss. 

• On Tuesday the team is right back on the court for an afternoon contest with New Brunswick.

KARATE

• Monday morning marked the first ever karate matches at the Canada Games.

• 16-year-old Sadie McFarlane of Prince Albert competed early on but did not reach the final.

• In the male kata, Ahmed Shehata of Saskatoon had a great day. He finished third in his ranking group A to reach the final. In the final, he had a top-five finish for Team Sask.

• Karate - Kumite begins early Tuesday morning. Shehata will compete in the opening bout (61 kg) vs Vincent Lumacad of Team NT at 7 a.m. CST. He will need to win to advance. The final is scheduled for 10 a.m. CST.

TABLE TENNIS

• More doubles on Monday. The female doubles team of Lucy Fan, 17, and Aryanna Liu, 16, reached stage two. They beat Nunavut 3-0 in their first match of stage 2 before falling 3-0 to Manitoba. They did not reach the semi-final.

• On the male side, Nino Ding, 17 of Regina, and  Kevin Lu, 14, entered stage 2 of male doubles Monday  morning. They beat Team NT 3-0 in their first match before falling 3-0 to New Brunswick 3-0 in their second match. They failed to reach the semi-final.

• Group play started late Monday afternoon in the team male event. Ding and Lu dropped their first match to New Brunswick 3-1. They’ll play Newfoundland on Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. CST.

• The team female event will also begin on Tuesday morning with Liu and Fan meeting Newfoundland at 7a.m. CST.

SQUASH

• Individual male competition - Will Shevkenek and Isaiah Richter both dropped their Monday matches 3-0. Neither made it to the quarter finals.

• In the female competition, Ellie Gelowitz lost her Monday match 3-0 and failed to reach the quarter final.

• Khushi Goyal lost the first two sets to Anne Hargraves of Manitoba, but came storming back to force a fifth and deciding set. In the end Goyal lost a close set 11-9 and the match 3-2. She did not advance to the quarter finals.

• Tuesday is a day off and team competitions are scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

FREESTYLE SKIING

• Due to weather conditions, Freestyle Ski competitions on Monday were cancelled.

• On Tuesday, Slopestyle qualifications begin at 9:45 a.m. CST and Big Air qualifications are scheduled for 1:20 p.m. CST. Both Zadee Chapman of Battleford and Talance Alyse Kalmakoff of Maidstone are scheduled to compete in both.

SPEED SKATING - short track

• Monday marked the first day of competition at the North Rustico Canada Games Centre. 

• In the female 1,500m Kara Harms failed to reach the quarter final. She’ll compete in the bottom bracket semi final scheduled for Tuesday morning.

• In the male 1,500m Liam McKague of Saskatoon reached the quarterfinal finishing in seventh in his race, short of the semi-final. Max Williams of Saskatoon, Lambert Schwartzenberger of Christopher Lake, Matthew Engel of Lemberg, and Mikko Veeman of Saskatoon all failed to reach the quarterfinals.  In the bottom-bracket quarterfinals, Williams, Engel, and Schwartzenberger finished 1-2-3 in their race. Bottom bracket semi-final is scheduled for Tuesday.

• In the 500m - female, Cara Harms finished fourth in her preliminary race, Race F, and then third in her qualification race, Race E. Sophia Hrycuik of Saskatoon finished fourth in her preliminary group race and fourth in her qualifying group race. Quarterfinals and the bottom bracket final are scheduled for Thursday.

• In the 500m - male preliminary group races, McKague finished third, Engel finished fourth, Williams finished third, Schwartzenberger finished 3rd and Veeman finished 4th in their respective heats. In the bottom bracket quarterfinals both Veeman and Engel won their heats.

SPEED SKATING - long track

• Team Sask flagbearer Luca Veeman will be one of eight Saskatchewan speed skaters (four male, four female) taking the ice in Halifax when competition begins on Tuesday. 

• The male 1,500m is scheduled for 7:50 a.m. CST and the female 1,500m is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. CST.
