EDMONTON β Police say two people have been charged in the death of an eight-year-old girl in Edmonton.
They say patrol officers responded to a welfare call related to the child at a home on Monday.
But they have not been able to find her and believe she's dead. Β
Officers say a 27-year-old woman was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and indignity to a body, while a 66-year-old man has been charged with accessory to first-degree murder and indignity to a dead body.Β
Police are not releasing the names of the suspects or the child β who knew each other β in order to protect the identities of other children related to the girl.Β
Police are continuing to look for the girl's body outside of the city.
βThis was a fluid and fast-moving investigation, and weβd like to thank the family for their co-operation as they navigate this tragic and unfathomable loss,β Staff Sgt. Colin Leathem said in a news release Friday.
βWe would also like to thank our external agency partners, in particular the RCMP, who immediately came forward to assist.β
